Liquid Paintings Series:

Liquid Paintings is a series of digital artworks that explore the emergence and patterns of mycelial life through a synthesis of generative and simulation processes. This series blurs the boundaries between the tangible and the ephemeral, with dynamic patterns and shimmering hues reminiscent of geological formations, organic flows, and cosmic phenomena. The making process registers on the vectorized texture of the works a dynamic interplay of deliberation and chance, entropy and order, inviting a contemplation on the concept of life and interconnectedness beyond the artist’s canvas to the universe.

Method:

The work is done by inputting the semi-random result from a reaction diffusion simulation into image-to-image generative AI in Touchdesigner, and the output is color graded with the color scheme of a video of latent space walk, and eventually inputting this image into a 3D particle system. Given a noise velocity field, the particles at different locations move at different velocities, creating motion trails added by a “bloom.” The targeted visual style is a high-resolution moss-like, or hair-like surface which can be zoomed in extremely large and which reveals particles and their vector movement.

Limited Edition of 10Symbiont evokes a human form engaged in a substance exchange and symbiotic relationship with its environment, emphasizing that the human body itself is an environment. Composed of multiple layers of mycelial strands, the artwork’s dark areas shimmer with subtle yet rich purple and blue hues when illuminated, reminiscent of the iridescent wings of a starling.

Pyro takes its name from Pyronema, a group of fire-eating fungi. As a life-renewing force, it traces the path of fire — a force of both destruction and creation. The cycle of destruction and renewal is not binary but exists in perpetual motion and transformation. The term Pyro also refers to fire simulation in procedural 3D computer graphics, further connecting to the new media techno-culture.

Limited Edition of 10 Inspired by mycelium, Hyphea depicts streams of embodiment rather than streams of consciousness. These streams branch and intertwine, creating something greater than the individual self. As a child, Yiou often imagined herself transforming into different animals. Now, however, she is more intrigued by the idea of becoming a glowing, living network—a form that connects countless elements underground through streams of embodiment.

Apart from the four above still frames, which were produced as museum-grade archival prints, framed and exhibited at Becoming Other, Yiou could make custom, unique images of this series, using the same techniques, taking in different input such as image or sound and visualizing these input in a final composition. The below are some unexhibited pieces.
